YANGSHUO In The Lens

A Chinese poet Wu Mai describing the beauty of Yangshuo wrote: “Guilin scenes are the finest under Heaven, but Yangshuo’s are even more enchanting. Images of fantastic peaks float on water. The wonders of the land and river never cease to awe the spirit.”

Yangshuo scenery is characterized by green mountains, beautiful water, exquisite caves and fantastic rocks. The beautiful Li River flows more than 60 kilometers through Yangshuo County. The incredible natural crafting of the mountains on both shores brings out the essence of the beauty of the area’s scenery. Within Yangshuo County, three tributaries, the Dayuan River, the Yulong River and the Jinbao River all branch into the Li River.

Having 1,400 years of history, Yangshuo became a county in A.D. 590. from ancient times until now, this special place ahs attracted scholars and offcials for sight-seeing.

The technology of photography was brought to China at the beginning of the last century. After the taking of portraits developed into taking scenery, photographers started to pay attention to the scenery of Yangshuo. Already in the 1930s, visitors were coming to Yangshuo for photographic artwork. In May 1931, a group of 25 photographers from Guangzhou organized a “Double Five Tour” to Guilin – Yangshuo for photographing. This was the earliest recorded photographic group to Yangshuo. The group took a lot of pictures across the East Mountain.
